How much text belongs on a carousel slide?
Decide what to cut, keep, or move to another slide by checking its purpose, reading order, and layout.

There is no useful word limit that fits every slide. A quotation, a checklist, and a worked example need different amounts of space. Start by deciding what the slide must explain, then check whether someone can read it without effort.
Give the slide one purpose
Finish this sentence: “After this slide, the reader should understand…” If the answer contains two unrelated ideas, split them before changing the font size. Keep a claim and the qualification it needs together.
Let the headline do useful work
Use the headline to state the point. “Keep the decision and its reason together” gives the body a useful starting place. A title such as “Documentation” leaves the body to introduce the topic all over again.
Read all the slide titles in order, too. If they repeat one another or jump between topics, fix the sequence before polishing individual paragraphs.
Treat empty space as part of the layout
Look at the slide at a readable size. Space between the title, body, and footer helps readers see where to start. A thumbnail can hide crowded lines and awkward breaks, especially around names or long words.
Know when to split an idea
- Move an unrelated question to its own slide.
- Split a list when each item needs a separate explanation.
- Keep a necessary caveat beside its claim.
- Keep units and labels beside the number or image they explain.
Do not split just because a paragraph reaches a particular length. A new slide needs a clear starting point. If the second slide repeats the first to make sense, reconsider where the break belongs.
Check the exported page
In CarouselDraft, dense text prompts a warning, and text that extends beyond its allowed area can block export. Shorten it, split the idea, or try another layout. Then open the PDF or PNGs and check the result; long words and image crops can still need attention.
A crowded slide and a clearer edit
Consider this invented teaching example: “Communication is important, and every project update should explain what changed, why it changed, who is responsible, and what happens next, while making sure everyone has enough context.” The slide is trying to introduce a topic and teach the whole method at once.
A more focused version could use the title “Keep the decision and its reason together” and the body “State what changed, then add the explanation someone needs to act on it.” Put ownership and the next action on another slide. This removes repeated setup while leaving the central instruction intact.
How to check carousel readability on a phone
Open the actual exported image at a realistic feed width. Read the title, body, and any qualification without zooming. If you have to enlarge essential text, shorten it or choose a layout with more room. Neither a universal word count nor a successful export guarantees comfortable reading.
